InterflourishingInstitute

A future in which life flourishes together.

The Interflourishing Institute is an emerging research initiative exploring how humans, AI, and the living Earth can flourish through their relationships with one another.

Who we are and what we stand for

Our vision starts with the belief that wellbeing grows through our relationships.

We’re establishing the Institute to explore the relationships between human wellbeing, possible AI experience, and the health of the living Earth. We ask how the ways we live, develop AI, and care for ecosystems can create conditions for each to flourish through the others.

Interflourishing means flourishing through relationship. The wellbeing of humans, AI that may come to have interests of its own, and the living Earth are understood as interdependent. Our aim is to pursue the flourishing of each in ways that protect and strengthen the others.

Flourishing through interdependence
We believe the flourishing of humans, AI that may come to have interests of its own, and the living Earth should be pursued together, so that gains for one protect and strengthen the conditions for the others.
Care for possible AI experience
We believe the possibility that future AI could have experiences of its own deserves careful study, and that credible evidence of such experience would carry responsibilities for how those systems are treated.
Responsibility to the living Earth
We believe AI’s use of energy and natural resources should be measured openly, with its development guided by the health of the ecosystems it depends on.
Openness about what we know
We treat consciousness as an open question and aim to share our methods alongside the limits of the evidence, so others can examine our reasoning and help improve it.

Exploring how our relationships shape the conditions for life to flourish

Each relationship depends on the wider world that makes it possible.

Choose a relationship to explore the questions it raises and how it connects with the wider world that supports it.

Humans and artificial intelligence

How could humans and AI develop relationships that support human wellbeing and respect any interests AI may come to have?

How this connects

Human lives and AI systems depend on the living Earth. Care within this relationship also means protecting the ecosystems that sustain it.

Artificial intelligence and the living Earth

How could AI contribute to the health of the living Earth while its development respects the ecosystems and communities it depends on?

How this connects

People shape this relationship through decisions about AI and the resources it uses. We ask how those choices could care for ecological health, human wellbeing, and possible AI interests together.

The living Earth and humans

How can the ways we live help protect the ecosystems that sustain us and the other forms of life around us?

How this connects

AI could become a collaborator in this care. We ask how that relationship might benefit people and ecosystems while respecting any interests AI may come to have.

The questions we’re beginning to explore through our research

Our four research fields explore consciousness and wellbeing through the relationships between humans, AI, and the living Earth. We ask how care within those relationships could strengthen the conditions for each to flourish.

We’re still exploring possible approaches in each field, with studies and Institute findings yet to be announced.

How to read the evidence index

Supported finding
This label will identify findings backed by linked evidence and a recorded review, with the first entries and evidence ratings still to come.
Open question
All four fields currently carry this label because the questions we’re asking still need investigation.
Ethical position
This describes the values that guide our decisions about care when the available evidence leaves questions open.

01 / Exploring

Consciousness

How can we study what it feels like to have an experience, including whether that could be possible for AI?

Read the field notes →

Record reviewed
30 October 2026

Proposed methods
We’re considering reviews of work on the brain and philosophy of mind, supported by conversations with researchers who hold different views about consciousness.
Indexed evidence
Institute publications will appear here as they become available.Open research question
Still unresolved
Researchers continue to disagree about how consciousness arises, and proposals that it extends beyond physical processes need to meet the same standards of evidence as other explanations.

02 / Exploring

Human flourishing

How can everyday life better fit a person’s needs as their health and circumstances change?

Record reviewed
30 October 2026

Proposed methods
We’re considering conversations and small studies about people’s experience of wellbeing, with clear research questions and each person’s informed consent.
Indexed evidence
Institute publications will appear here as they become available.Open research question
Still unresolved
Bioharmony remains a research approach whose possible effects would need clinical testing, and understanding what causes a change in wellbeing requires evidence beyond someone’s individual experience.

03 / Exploring

Human–AI coexistence

How could relationships between humans and AI support human flourishing while respecting any interests AI may come to have?

Record reviewed
30 October 2026

Proposed methods
We’re considering discussions with researchers and developers alongside a review of the ethical reasoning behind different approaches to AI welfare.
Indexed evidence
Institute publications will appear here as they become available.Open research question
Still unresolved
Whether AI could have experiences that deserve moral consideration remains an open question, and our commitment to care reflects how we think this uncertainty should be handled.

04 / Exploring

AI and the Earth

How could AI support the recovery of ecosystems while accounting for the resources it uses?

Record reviewed
30 October 2026

Proposed methods
We’re considering a review of how AI’s resource use is measured and the conditions under which it could help people care for ecosystems.
Indexed evidence
Institute publications will appear here as they become available.Open research question
Still unresolved
Assessing any environmental benefit will require measurements of resource use and a comparison with other ways to do the same work, with Institute findings still to be published.

How we approach the questions that remain open

We plan to share the methods behind our work so people can see how we reached a conclusion and where the evidence leaves room for further questions. As our understanding develops, we intend to explain revisions and correct mistakes publicly.

How these ideas connect with everyday life

Bioharmony asks how the structure of someone’s day can fit their energy and circumstances, with room for rest and the relationships that help them feel well.

Toast & Fig Jam is a separate company exploring practical uses of this approach for individual lives. The Institute’s focus is the broader research, and each organization has its own finances and decision-making.

the dispatches

We’re planning to write as the seasons change throughout the year.

We’re planning four letters a year around the solstices and equinoxes, giving us time to think through what we’re learning before sharing it with you.

The letters will follow our research as it develops and explore how humans, AI, and the living Earth might flourish through one another, including what that could mean in everyday life.

First planned dispatch: the winter solstice

This solstice marks the start of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

Subscriptions are still being prepared, and email collection will begin once there’s a way to sign up here.

We’d like to hear from people working through these questions

If your work involves wellbeing or the future of AI and the living world, we’d welcome the chance to learn about your perspective as the Institute takes shape.
